DALLAS, Texas - An 18-year-old man died four days after he was allegedly shot in the neck by a 15-year-old boy while the two were sitting inside a vehicle, according to the Dallas Police Department.
The victim, identified as Cristopher Nevarez, 18, died Oct. 7, 2026, after being hospitalized in critical condition following the Oct. 3 shooting.
Dallas police said the 15-year-old suspect, who also suffered a gunshot wound to his hand, was arrested Oct. 5 on an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon warrant. Following Nevarez's death, investigators announced that the charge would be updated to manslaughter.
The juvenile remains in custody.
Two Shooting Victims Arrived at Dallas Hospital
The investigation began around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, when Dallas police responded to a call at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas in the 8200 block of Walnut Hill Lane.
Officers learned that Nevarez and the 15-year-old had arrived at the hospital in a private vehicle after being shot at another location.
Nevarez appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and was listed in critical condition. The younger teen had been shot in the hand.
As detectives investigated the circumstances surrounding the shooting, they determined that the 15-year-old had allegedly shot Nevarez from behind while sitting inside a car.
Police said the juvenile also shot himself in the hand during the incident.
Authorities have not disclosed whether the shooting was intentional or accidental, what led to the gunfire or where the incident originally occurred.
Victim Dies Four Days After Shooting
On Monday, Oct. 5, members of the Dallas Police Fugitive Unit arrested the 15-year-old on a warrant charging him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Nevarez remained hospitalized but died from his injuries Wednesday, Oct. 7.
Following his death, Dallas police said the case would be updated to reflect a manslaughter offense.
Police have not identified the juvenile suspect because of his age.
Investigators have not released information about the relationship between Nevarez and the suspect or whether anyone else was present inside the vehicle when the shooting occurred.
